Dear business owner,

From the reviewed studies, it was clear that OHS hazards can potentially result in a number of injuries, sickness, and harm.
Some of the injuries that occur in the workplace are:

  •  transportation accidents;

  •  workplace violence;

  •  slipping and falling;

  •  toxic events;

Occupational health and safety (OHS) focuses on reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring a safe working environment. While accidents can happen at any time, employers still have to make sure they are taking care to guarantee the safety of their employees.

Prioritizing OHS at your business has several key benefits, including:

  • Reduced risk or accidents or injuries by identifying and mitigating hazards;
  • Improved efficiency and productivity due to fewer employees missing work from illness or injury;
  • Improved employee relations and morale (a safer work environment is a less stressful work environment);
  • Reduced costs associated with accidents or injuries (healthcare and rehabilitative costs, losses in productivity, impact on employees’ well-being);
  • Lower insurance premiums resulting from fewer workplace incidents and workers’ compensation claims;

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Safety in the workplace is a major concern for both workers and employer. A staggering 153 worker injuries happen every 15 seconds according to the International Organization for Standardization. In really severe circumstances, unsafe conditions may even lead to death. ISO 45001 helps lessen this risk with its aim of preventing such things from happening - from being killed or seriously injured - just through being at work. With all different versions of OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) being used worldwide previously, this was challenging, but no longer thanks to the brand-new international standard ISO 45001.
Achieving ISO 45001 certification can protect you from certain hazards in your workplace and allow you to prove how committed you are to health and safety. Small or large companies as well as ones operating within various industries could benefit from this designation. If you have already obtained an OHSAS 18001 certificate, then it would be wise for you to also pursue ISO 45001 certification too!
To maintain ISO 45001 standards, organizations will need to implement the guidelines and obtain certification from a third party like BeasKonsult. Once certified, organizations are required to undergo an annual surveillance audit and recertify every three years.
In ISO 45001, worker is a phrase that includes everyone from the lowest level worker to even those who don't work for your company but still contribute their services or products - such as contractors and outsourced service/product suppliers. And every business is different so it's always worth considering these changes when they happen and responding accordingly so you can stay on top of maintaining compliance across the entire system.
The term 'continual improvement' is often misinterpreted as being continuous. The term actually refers to progressive change over time; it does not mean an instantaneous or even constant change. For example, if there are changes made to the company's training system or process, these will also contribute to an overall improvement in performance and quality of service delivery.
